Deliberate Asking

View Comments

The Bible states in 1 Samuel 1:19 that  ”the LORD remembered Hannah.”  God in His omniscience never forgot Hannah nor has He forgotten anything in the past, present, or future.  Scripture is declaring that God remembered what Hannah had asked for in prayer.  She had asked for a son.  I am convicted that so much of my asking is so generic that it is difficult to tell whether God granted what I asked for or not.

As we discuss reaching the next generation on Sunday mornings, without question, the key strategy from Scripture is prayer.  Despite our contextualization, marketing, and culturally relevant connecting; if God does not act in grace and power, there will be no reaching of anyone.  That’s why we need to be deliberate in our asking.  First, we need to know what to ask for.  Prayer is not an indifferent expression of God you know what you want to do or what you are going to do, so go ahead and do it.  Prayer must be informed.  We can be informed first by our study of Scripture.  God’s will and His past patterns are revealed through Scripture.  A study of culture, trends, and patterns of people we desire to reach is also helpful.  Informed prayers will be more specific.  Specifically answered prayer causes us to grow in faith and grace.  Answered prayer is also an instrument of influence among those who are not yet followers of Christ.  It seems almost trite and been said many times before; but prayer is certainly more important than we could ever know and the most untapped resource of power for everything that God desires to do in our lives.  Until next time. . .Wes

Getting Started

It has never been my goal or intention to have a blog.  I must confess that I rarely have read a blog unless someone has told me of some interesting comment.  My ministry team has encouraged me to do this blog.  In reality, they set this blog up then gave me the information to get on it before even talking to me.   The trip to India was a great reason to do a blog.   We will see how it goes from here on out.

I would be amazed that anyone would be interested in reading this blog, but some of my team members think that some will.  My intent is to share some things that are going on in my life and maybe some books that I am reading.  The purpose will be to encourage the body and glorify the Savior.

I just got off an ichat and then a skype with my oldest son, Jonathan who is in New York City with our youth working with the Parable Church and our own Vicki Cline.   What a great opportunity for prayerwalking and ministry in one of the most populated areas of the US.  It is exciting to see God calling people out of our local fellowship to go to places where there is little or no access to the gospel.

This week will be the second sermon in our new sermon series “Reaching Generation Next Now.”  I have also selected this as our theme for our Arkansas Baptist State Convention for this year’s annual meeting.  Our focus this Sunday at FBC Rogers will be on how prayer will be the key strategy to reaching this generation with the gospel.  The statistics are alarming concerning how our nation is becoming more and more lost every year.   Only the power of God that is captured through prayer will reverse this declining trend.

When the preacher preaches on prayer, he comes under great conviction in his own life as to his need of being a more of a prayer warrior.  A great place for me to start a personal prayer revival is Psalm 51 which is David’s personal confession of sin and his need of God’s forgiveness and restoration.  God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble.  I need grace and long for His grace.  His graces calls, convinces, converts, sustains, conforms, and keeps—His grace is amazing.  I need grace in my praying.   Until next time.  Wes

India – Day 5

We traveled to the land that Ramesh has purchased for a future school of evangelism.  We had a dedication time.  We then made the return trip to the city (2 hours one way).  The rest of the team was dropped off at the apartment and I accompanied Ramesh and Esther to a visa consultant.  He is a very knowledgeable man concerning visa.  He worked at the embassy for 29 years and has been consulting for the past 18 years. He gave some great advice and I think will give Ramesh the best shot at getting his visa after being turned down 4 times already.  I got to share the Gospel with this 76 year old Hindu man after our meeting.  We had a great visit and I challenged him to consider what I had shared and I told him that I hoped that he would trust in Christ as his personal Savior as God’s only way to heaven.  I had the opportunity to share the difference with our faith and every other world religion.  I asked if he had every heard that before and he said that he had not.  I am now at Ramesh and Esther’s house where she, her sister, and brother-in-law are preparing an American supper for us.  I will leave at 3 am in the morning for the airport on my return trip.  The rest of the team will leave the next day.  It has been an awesome trip and only heaven will tell the impact that it has had on all of us and on eternity.  Our prayer is that in some way we may have encouraged our national brothers and sisters to join God in reaching India with the Gospel.  We believe that it will take place through church planting movements in house churches.  Looking forward to getting home.

India – Day 4

We traveled 80 km today to do T4T training in Kolar.  It was a long drive and dangerous if you have ever driven on Indian highways.  The ride left most of us a little sick.  We arrived at the place of meeting and discovered that the toilet facilities were the bushes.  The ladies were so plesed.  The room was filled and people were sitting outside.  The power was out but they got it going.  It was very hot in the building.  We preached, sang, taught for 4 hours again.  Many responded to start house churches.  Ramesh is well respected among these people and his mother who led him to Christ is highly respected.   We were again honored with necklaces as their guests.  This culture honors its guest to a much greater extreme than we do.  We ate in an Indian restaurant and it took us 3 hours with some down pours of rain to get back to the city.  It was a dangerous ride.  We stopped on the way in had some coconut “water” on the way in that morning.  We retired earlier this night.  It has been a fast paced time.  For me, it has been like 3 Sundays, 3 days in a row (at least 4 sermons) coming off a 26 hour trip which I did not sleep on, throw in some travel and the food challenges; I know what the joy of the Lord being my strength is.  There is a great sense of blessing and significant ministry and enlarged vision on the part of our team.  We are blessed to be here but we (me especially since I am writing this) are ready to return to our families.  I do not particularly like traveling as some do.  I travel out of obedience and obligation to the Great Commission.  Because of that I have great joy in the Great Commission, but I always miss my wife and my 4 boys.  So I am already looking ahead to that reunion especially.  And even though I have preached, 14 or 15 times in 3 days, I am looking forward to standing in the pulpit of FBC Rogers on Sunday.

We went back for the second day of T4T at the same place.  There were some new people there and the state commissioner.  We were honored with sashes and placques and flowers.  We sang, Ashley shared her testimony and Ben and Ashley shared about Ben growing up in Jordan on the field and God’s call on his and Ashley’s life now.  I preached 4 times.  It was a good day.  We ate lunch at the meeting following.  The food is getting to all of us (except Ken and Ben).  We did house church in a community of Bania believers that live in a tent community.  We sat on mats in the open on the dirt.  We sang and I preached.  Ramesh always translated at the house church meetings.  He drew the net and several decisions were made for Christ and for baptism.  We rejoice in worshipping with the 30 plus gathered with others back in the dark corners around the tent listening.  Pray for these brothers and sisters as they follow God and live in this community of 200 families.  There is a risk of them being put out of there tent village because of their commitment to Christ but the greater risk is that those 200 families will come to the Savior.  Got back late again to the apartment but all were blessed.   We purchased some jewelry from the Bania’s as they are merchants and sell jewelry.
